Description
This publication contains data from child protection registers for all 150 English local authorities with social services responsibilities, covering the year ending 31 March, 2005. There were 552,000 referrals, slightly down on previous years; of those, 121,800 (22 per cent) were repeat referrals made within the last year. There were 25,900 children on child protection registers on 31 March, 2005. 13 per cent of children registered during 2004-05 had previously been registered, and 3,000 children on the register were being looked after by local authorities. 43 per cent of registrations related to children considered to be at risk of neglect; emotional abuse accounted for 19 per cent of registrations, followed by physical abuse (18 per cent) and sexual abuse (9 per cent). 99 per cent of all child protection cases which should have been reviewed during the year were reviewed.
