Description

The National Trust has throughout its existence shared with others a concern for the preservation of the varied historical landscapes of England, Wales and Northern Ireland, and an appreciation of their meaning and significance. The conference at which most of these papers were presented examined a number of broad themes with related case studies illustrating the wide range of archaeological activity for which the Trust is responsible. Topics included gardens and designed landscapes; historic buildings; industrial archaeology; and historic ecology. The speakers also assessed past achievements and future opportunities, partnerships, working practices and philosophy in the recording, understanding and conservation of an outstanding national archaeological resource.Contributors: PETER SALWAY, ANGUS STIRLING, SIMON JERVIS, PETER FOWLER, JULIAN H.
