"Language and Society in Africa" provides a survey, from a list of renowned linguists, of sociolinguistic theory and practice in Africa. The book is based on papers delivered at an important conference at the University of the Witwatersrand in February 1990 and includes chapters on language policy, language planning, the analysis of social interaction, applied sociolinguistics and language and cultural studies. Authors include Bernd Heine, Carol Eastman, Neville Alexander, Carol Myers-Scotton and Matthias Brenzinger.
