Description

for SATB with organ or piano introduction This motet sets a text from John Bunyan's The Pilgrim's Progress, in which Mr Valiant-for-Truth poignantly meditates on the subject of his own approaching death. The work concludes with the protagonist passing into heaven with the choir emulating 'the trumpets [sounding] for him on the other side'. Over a decade later in 1951, Vaughan Williams's operatic adaptation of The Pillgrim's Progress was performed for the first time, reflecting his continued fondness for Bunyan's tale.
