Eight essays from a symposium held at SOAS in 2007 examine the archaeology and culture of the Ryukuyu Islands, a chain of some 105 islands extending from Kyushu to Taiwan in the East China Sea. Topics include the early settlement of the Islands, the evidence for trade and exchange, the rise and nature of the Ryukuyu monarchy and the architecture of the islands.
