This four-volume set takes stock of the seismic changes in domestic violence over the last few decades, starting with explaining why and how our world is different today than when the anti-domestic violence revolution began. Contributors pay special attention to how race, class, and cultural differences affect the experience of abuse and the impact of interventions, and provide compelling real life examples to illustrate issues, responses, and the daily challenges of victims, service providers and others. Since the first battered women's shelters opened in the early l970s, the age-old prerogative for men to physically subjugate their female partners has been challenged on a number of fronts. On the ground in virtually every corner of the globe, the fight to end domestic violence consists of the proliferation of community-based services for battered women; a range of policies to combat the problem; a broad spectrum of frequently innovative programs to protect, counsel, or otherwise support abused women and their children and/or to arrest, sanction or counsel perpetrators; a dramatic shift in how the media portray violence against women; and a growing critique of values that support the exercise of unacceptable forms of power and control in relationships and families. These volumes take stock of these changes and how they affect victims, offenders, communities, and the services and systems in place to handle domestic violence when and where it happens. Our society has made an enormous investment in stopping abuse in families and relationships, but questions still remain. Are women safer today? Have legal and criminal justice reforms made perpetrators more accountable? Are Batterer Intervention Programs (BIPs) effective? Have changes in Family Court improved the prospects for women and children? How have Child Protection Services responded to the new knowledge the effects of exposure on children? How has success affected community-based shelters? What is the status of women's violence against men or same sex partners? These questions and more are answered in these pages. Expert contributors uncover the realities of domestic violence and the toll it takes on families, individuals, communities, and society at large.
