現在までに日本から記録されているクモ類（Ａｒａｎｅａｅ）の全種（６４科約１５００種）を網羅し（新種記載を含む）、科および属の検索表を掲げた。サラグモ科の全種（１１０属約２８０種）を日本で初めて図示した。クモを総合的に理解できるように、節足動物、鋏角類の進化から解きほぐし、形態、分類、系統などについて概説、サソリやダニなど近縁の各群にも言及した。独自の視点で世界のクモ１１５科の分類表を掲載。種の項では、一般的な特徴の他、分布や生態学的な事柄について付記し、主な種については、口絵のカラー生態写真を充実。研究法、標本の作り方、生態写真の撮影法にも触れる。
