Description

Bullying and harassment are increasingly recognised as major problems in the workplace, and can occur whenever staff or managers abuse or misuse their power over others. They can have devastating results on the individuals concerned, and also cause significant difficulties for the organisation itself, in terms of: reduced effectiveness caused by the tension and ill-feeling generated; legal problems; and, the risk of the organisation gaining a reputation for being a poor employer. There is therefore much to be gained from organisations taking seriously the challenges of bullying and harassment for the sake of the employees, the employers and the organisation's stakeholders. This training manual, previously published by Learning Curve Publishing, and now in a revised and updated version, offers materials to support the promotion of staff learning around: how to prevent bullying and harassment; how to respond when they do occur; and, how to deal with the aftermath. It will help: raise levels of awareness and understanding; support committed individuals and organisations to pursue the goal of a safe and harassment-free working environment; and, convince others that it is in their interest to tackle bullying and harassment, and the problems that these issues raise. The material is suitable for both managers and front-line staff. Mangers should be aware of all the material in this manual, and should let it inform their day-to-day interactions with staff. Training for frontline staff allows them to talk about their experiences and to recognise when behaviour is not acceptable; and to consider and rehearse individual and collective responses to bullying and harassment. Further exercises around discrimination ensure that nothing is 'swept under the carpet' or left unsaid. The twelve chapters can be delivered as a complete programme, or areas can be prioritised to meet specific circumstances and demands. There is also a pragmatic understanding that not all staff can commit to 12 sessions. The training can be customised to meet individuals' requirements, and trainers can feel confident in the knowledge that the manual provides them with far more material than they will require in their training. Although very few trainers consider themselves experts on bullying and harassment, this manual has been designed to support and supplement the knowledge trainers will already have gained from everyday practical experience. Clearly written by an expert in the workplace well-being field, this manual helps to lay the foundations for understanding the complexities involved, and helps employing organisations ensure that they understand the value of promoting dignity at work and are well equipped to do so. It is an essential resource for people committed to making the workplace a humane and dignified setting, free from bullying, harassment and victimisation.
