Description
Following on from the success of "Antony Gormley: Blind Light and Psycho Buildings", The Hayward has established itself as one of the world's leading venues for complex, large-scale installation art. Its 2009 summer show is another major and ambitious experimental exhibition. "Walking in My Mind" transforms the gallery's unique spaces into a 'giant brain', bringing together large-scale installations by ten international artists, that in different ways explore the workings of the mind, the ways in which artists think, process information and picture the world around them. "Walking in My Mind" aims to reveal the foundations of creativity. The exhibition and its accompanying catalogue highlight an important strand of contemporary artistic production focused on giving form to models of human thought. It features works by some of the most important contemporary artists from around the world, including Charles Avery, Thomas Hirschhorn, Yayoi Kusama, Bo Christian Larsson, Mark Manders, Yoshitomo Nara, Jason Rhoades, Pipilotti Rist, Chiharu Shiota and Turner Prize winner Keith Tyson. They each represent different ways of revealing the mysterious mental processes of creativity.
Using diverse media including drawing, painting, video and sculpture, they investigate the nature of our perception of the world, our thinking processes and our primal emotions. Their installations range from the ordered to the chaotic, and from the meditative to the overwhelming. This richly illustrated book will feature site-specific photography of newly commissioned works as well as already-existing installations, and essays by Sue Blackmore and Brian Dillon.
