内容説明
This is the only study of the 200 religious works by the French romantic painter Eugene Delacroix, an artist who created the style of modern religious art. The book presents us with an understanding of the historical background of later twentieth-century artists who worked with a religious theme. This study follows established methodology that examines religious painting in terms of the theology of these subjects, which up to the modern period was a standard art-historical method. The work illuminates the nuances and contradictions of religious art and reveals that a new iconographical language existed among varied artists and styles. Also investigated is the motivation for the rise of pious prints in the 1850s.
