Description
The recent Parliamentary expenses scandal has corroded faith in the UK's democracy and precipitated a collapse of trust in politics. The standing of politicians has never been lower. This political crisis has run alongside an economic recession that has caused job losses and business closures. Public trust in those running Britain's financial services has been seriously undermined. This paper, "Building Britain's Future (Cm. 7654)", outlines the action that the UK Government is taking to: move the UK from recession to recovery and forge a new model of economic growth; restore trust and accountability to the political system through democratic reform and renewal; and, modernise our public services and national infrastructure. Government action will be focused on three clear priorities: cleaning up politics and reforming democracy; taking Britain out of recession into recovery, so as to put in place the conditions for future economic success; and, further reforming Britain's public services and modernising the national infrastructure.
The policies address global and domestic challenges, including: globalisation; the threat of climate change; restoring public trust in politics and democracy; meeting rising expectations of public service (particularly in the National Health Service and education); supporting families in an ageing society; and, strengthening civic responsibility. Annexes include the Government's draft legislative programme for 2009-10, a list of major forthcoming policy publications, and lists of key deliverables for 2009-10 and 2011 to 2020.
