Summary: Through mythocriticism, the components of the myth emerge, highlighting three types: the demoniac Whore, the Prostitute, forgiven and repentant, and the good Seductress. The mythical prostitute is revealed as a cornerstone of the whole biblical myth. The emergence and pervading influence of the myth are studied through several major novels of the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries, periods when the image of women and the art of the novel were evolving considerably. Although sometimes contested, it is nevertheless the basis for the representation of women in novels. It enables us to question the notion of transgression and offers us, from text to text, an ambivalent image of women. The destiny of the biblical Prostitute merges with that of novel writing, reviled but ultimately redeemed
