Summary: Ubu Roi is one of the precursors to the Theatre of the Absurd and the greater surrealist art movement of the early twentieth century. Begun as a schoolboy satire of an unpopular teacher, the plot is a parody of various Shakespearean themes, with Ubu the anti-protagonist at the center of this bit of anti-theater. The play performs an assault on language, wherein slang is mixed with fake archaisms, and literary vocabulary and diction--wildly incorrect--alternate with vulgar language to satirize the complacent bourgeois, their absurd practices, and the abuse of authority engendered by success. After rioting during the first (and final) performance in 1896, Ubu Roi was outlawed from the French stage
