内容説明

This work contains texts by Heike Biedermann, Ulrich Bischoff, Birgit Dalbajewa, Dietmar Elger, Elisabeth Hipp, Jeanne Anne Nugent, Gerd Spitzer. It includes a foreword by Michael Brand and Martin Roth. This catalogue of an exhibition at the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles brings together a select group of paintings from the Galerie Neue Meister in Dresden - one of the most significant collections of German art from 1800 to the present - and new work from renowned contemporary artist Gerhard Richter. Departing from traditional surveys, this exhibition places at its core paintings by the two best-known artists associated with Dresden: eight masterworks - including Cross in the Mountains - by Caspar David Friedrich, one of the central figures of German Romanticism, and a 2005 series of abstractions by Gerhard Richter, the pre-eminent German artist working today. Including works by artists such as Carl Gustav Carus, Arnold Bocklin, Max Liebermann, Lovis Corinth and Otto Dix, these works address the most pressing ideas in German art of the period; romanticism and the sublime, nationalism and regional identity, the nature of perception and the relation of art to history. This catalogue introduces unfamiliar artists and juxtaposes well-known painters in new ways, and includes essays on the history of the Galerie Neue Meister and German painting in this period, as well as an interview with Gerhard Richter conducted especially for this publication. It features text in English.
