The history of the Catholic Church is not a story containing one single, true and universally accepted series of beliefs. Although beliefs incongruous to the church are tolerated today, there was a time when the church tried to enforce its point of view with threats, excommunication, banishment, imprisonment, seizure of lands, torture, and death.
