内容説明
For media to function effectively they need to represent not only all manner of information and opinion, but also the constituents who represent this diversity. And while women in the South Asian media in recent years have achieved an increased presence in the industry, they are strikingly absent in decision-making positions or news editing and reporting. The list of barriers faced by women wanting to pursue careers in journalism includes stereotypes and negative cultural attitudes, inequity of employment conditions, and social and personal obstacles. In a global environment of denial and discrimination, this book takes a close look at conditions in South Asia, where conservative attitudes are in a state of constant attrition with the recent trend towards economic liberalization, political democratization, and most critically, the growing media industry. Drawing on the work of an AMIC-UNESCO project, the focus of this collection of essays is on describing the prevailing situation for women in the print media industry, identifying barriers preventing women from pursuing careers in journalism, and examining the social, political and cultural factors that prevent women from rising to senior positions. ""Asian Media Information and Communication Centre (AMIC)"" series is available exclusively from ISEAS for worldwide distribution.
