"This book is the second volume of electronic discussions that took place on the Animal Welfare Institute's Laboratory Animal Refinement & Enrichment Forum (LAREF). This forum was founded in 2002 to serve the international animal care and animal research community for the sharing of first-hand experiences on practical ways how to improve the living and handling conditions of animals kept in research laboratories. Of 2,866 comments posted between June 2007 and March 2010, a total of 1,912 were selected for this volume
Summary: This book is a collection of electronic discussions that took place on the Animal Welfare Institute's Laboratory Animal Refinement & Enrichment Forum between June 2007 and March 2010. Comments are based upon first-hand experiences about ways to improve the conditions under which animals are housed and handled in research facilities. Animals discussed include mice and other rodents, rabbits, rhesus macaques and other nonhuman primates, dogs, cats, pigs, goats, and poultry. Topics include housing, refinement and enrichment specifically for primates and for other animals, animal training, and the role of animal care personnel
