内容説明
This amply illustrated book recounts the fascinating history of the Karimjee Jivanjees, originally a family of poor Indian settlers in East Africa, and the rise of the family firm - Karimjee Jivanjee & Co. Drawing from a variety of sources, including interviews with family members and associates, the author offers a comprehensive, fascinating collective biography that spans over 200 years, including the role of various family members in shaping the political and economic history of Zanzibar and Tanzania, with close ties to the British and German Empires, as well as the African Independence Movements. Although heavily affected by the nationalisation programmes of the late 1960s, the Karimjee Jivanjees have since recovered and are now back in business. Much more than just a 'rags to riches' story, it is an account of life in, and history of East Africa through the eyes of the family of aSouth Asian settlers.
