Pétis de La Croix asserts in the preface to the original edition that the tales are adaptations of Indian comedies made by a Dervish named Mocles who entitled his collection "Hezaryek-Rouz" (Hazar yek ruz = The thousand and one days) and who then entrusted his manuscript to Pétis de La Croix
