Summary: Burning fossil fuels such as coal, oil and gas adds more carbon dioxide to the atmosphere. This colourless, odourless, naturally occurring gas turns the atmosphere into a giant greenhouse, trapping more of the sun's heat and raising the temperature each year. So far, estimates suggest the temperature has risen by half a degree centigrade, but by the year 2050 it could be up by three or four degrees. Many things will change in a chain reaction: sea level; crop growth; rainfall.
