Description and Table of Contents

Description

This study presents a completely new classification system for Egyptian watercraft models based on their nautical construction attributes. It is based on a full analysis and catalogue (which is included as an appendix) of all 586 known examples. The main conclusion is the comprehensive rejection of the idea that most models represent crafts with a religious function (whether funerary boats or sun-barques), but instead represent working boats. The study also examines the figurines which form part of the model, exploring themes of working life and social stratification.
