Description
Proceedings of Rivers '83, held in New Orleans, Louisiana, October 24-26, 1983. Sponsored by the Waterways, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering Division of ASCE.
This collection contains 91 papers offering a comprehensive international collection of knowledge, experience, and recent findings from field, laboratory, and theoretical analyses of river behavior. The erosion and sedimentation processes associated with river meandering have a profound effect on human use of rivers and their valleys, as well as the natural environment. Flood control, navigation, bank protection, and water supply projects; agricultural and urban development, transportation systems and pipelines adjacent to rivers; and exploration for mineral resources and fossil fuels all require a sound knowledge of the meandering process to be successful with minimum expenditure and minimum environmental disruption. Topics include: geomorphology, human activities, engineering analysis, and numerical and physical modeling. A final paper summarizes a discussion by conference participants of present knowledge of river meandering and future research directions.
