Includes the first post-war race, which was won by embryonic Ferrari - a company that would evolve towards greatness during the decade and score further victories in 1954 and '58. Jaguar is the big story of the 24 Hours in the 1950s, with victory in five of the decade's ten races: with the C-type in 1951 and '53, and with the D-type in 1955, '56 and '57. The tragic 1955 race: Pierre Levegh's Mercedes-Benz 300SLR crashed into the crowd, killing 83 spectators. The 1958 event brought the first of four victories for Belgian driver Olivier Gendebien and also marked the start of the Ferrari Testa Rossa's reign in sports car racing. Aston Martin's one and only success at Le Mans came in 1959, with Carroll Shelby and Roy Salvadori the successful drivers. With wonderful photographs and detailed commentary, this official book captures every aspect of the world's greatest motor race through the formative first decade of the post-war period.

After achieving the first French win for 32 years in 1972, Matra-Simca secured a hat-trick with further victories in '73 and '74, Pescarolo being the lead driver on all three occasions. John Wyer's British Mirage team won in 1975 with the formidable driver pairing of Jacky Ickx and Derek Bell - they would win twice more in the '80s. Porsche returned with a vengeance with the 936 model, winning with it in 1976 and '77, Ickx driving both times. Another French win came in 1978, for Alpine-Renault, followed in '79 by victory for the new Porsche 935, which would become a mainstay of endurance sports car racing for many years.
