Description

"I always liked drawing and line...one reason is that it is so portable - you can always carry a pencil and paper with you, and once it becomes a habit it is as simple as keeping a diary, only it is a visual one." Beth Van Hoesen In a career spanning more than five decades, artist and printmaker Beth Van Hoesen (1926 - 2010) created a remarkable body of editioned art. This catalogue raisonne authoritatively documents and fully illustrates her work in limited-edition prints, books, and portfolios. Sample preparatory drawings and proofs with artist notes are featured, allowing for a more complete understanding of Van Hoesen's art. Van Hoesen studied art at Stanford University, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1948. She also attended Escuela de Pintura y Escultura de la Escuela Esmeralda, Mexico City and California School of Fine Arts (San Francisco Art Institute). After graduating from Stanford, she travelled to France and studied at Ecole des Beaux Arts deFontainebleau, Academie Julian, and Academie de la Grande Chaumiere. Her work is represented in numerous public collections, including the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco; Library of Congress, Washington, DC; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Oakland Museum of California; Racine Art Museum, Wisconsin; Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC; University Museums, Iowa State University; and Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
