Description

Built by Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in memory of his wife, Taj Mahal is one of the most well-known world heritage (cultural) sites. Part of the monumental legacy series, the book provides a brief introduction to the monument, a mausoleum of white marble and an unrivalled masterpiece of Mughal art and architecture. Providing historical background with a study of farmans, inscriptions, and works of contemporary historians, it explores various aspects of the monument's concept and form. This volume discusses the plan; structure; style; workmen; materials used; building technique; architects; as well as expenditure and maintenance. The essential complement to the tomb building, the fourfold garden with its pathways and fountains; the intricate marble inlay work with coloured gemstone; and the calligraphy of sacred Quranic verses have all been examined in detail. The book concludes with how Taj was perceived by various European artists along with discussion on the Taj Museum, and other monuments around Taj. The book will be indispensable for the numerous tourists visiting the site. It will also interest students and scholars of history, art, and architecture.
