Summary: The thesis focuses on a material technique and its apprenticeship, through film recording and image analysis. It concerns the apprenticeship of hat manufacture in France and in Japan. Also considered are the investigative film strategies of in the three films presented here (Apprenties modistes en atelier, Kyoto : L'atelier de Kyoto, Création d'un chapeau à Chazelles-sur-Lyon). The text compares the manufacture of town and show hats, and describes the resort to mould esparto manufacture, a fast disappearing technique. The image analysis has helped to show the nature and order of the necessary manufacturing operations, the role of the hands and instruments, the repetition of the actions, their duration, all attesting a delicate luxury technique. Two separate film strategies were used and assessed : continuous description and non-focused description
