Summary: Sadako, the daughter of a tenant farmer, is waiting for her lover, Takashi, to come back from the war. Meanwhile, Heibei, the son of a large landowner is repatriated just before Takashi. He suffered a leg injury but this does not stop him from raping Sadako who later tries to commit suicide by drowning. She is saved by Takashi's older brother and eventually forced to marry Heibei. They have three children but their life together is filled with anger. Takashi married another woman and had children of his own. Sadako's daughter marries Takashi's daughter and Sadako. When Takashi dies, Sadako tries to reconcile her frustration and unhappiness in life and Heibei makes an attempt to reform
