Description

Frank Stella (*1936) is one of the last surviving heroes of American painting of the fifties and sixties. At the tender age of twenty, the artist hit the New York scene like a thunderbolt. His large-scale Black Paintings not only intensified the exploration of Minimalism in painting but also prepared the way for the "exit from the painting into space." Unlike his contemporaries, however, Stella went his own way, which led him to increasingly opulent, more baroque reliefs. By turning "from Minimalism to Maximalism" Stella became one of the most influential painters of the twentieth century. This fascinating publication presents Stella's artistic development over five decades, documenting the unique retrospective at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg with works by the painter, sculptor, and object artist.
