Description and Table of Contents

Description

Hans Christiansen (1866-1945) is among the most significant artists of German Jugendstil. His ground-breaking cover illustrations for the magazine Jugend were definitive of this diverse stylistic tendency. Hav-ing come to artistic maturity in Paris, he was sum-moned to Darmstadt in 1899 by Grand Duke Ernst Ludwig, where together with Joseph Maria Olbrich and Peter Behrens he became one of the first seven members of the Darmstadt Artists' Colony. There Christiansen distinguished himself as a genuinely versatile artist, who produced paintings, works of ar-chitecture and applied art, and magical festivals of lights. Illustrating the boundless ingenuity of his de-signs, the publication presents his entire oeuvre: paintings, wall papers, tapestries, illustrations, glass, ceramics, jewelry, stained glass windows, silverware, multiple furniture ensembles, and the most famous rose of Jugendstil. The catalogue also includes previ-ously unknown works, such as his fashion and poster designs from the 1920s.Ausstellungen/Exhibitions: Institut Mathildenhoehe Darmstadt 12.10.2014-1.2.2015 | Broehan Museum Berlin 18.2.-24.5.2015 | Museum Villa Stuck 18.6.-20.9.2015 | Museumsberg Flensburg 11.10.2015-17.1.2016
