Description
The title of this publication, Focus on Ability, Celebrate Diversity: Highlights of the Asian and Pacific Decade of Disabled Persons, 1993-2002 reflects its purpose. Amongst the most significant achievements of the Decade has been the positive shift in attitudes towards persons with disabilities and the increased awareness, acknowledgement and celebration of their diverse abilities. This has been accompanied by the realization that further progress cannot be made unless it is within a human rights framework, that disability issues must be addressed in full consultation with persons with disabilities themselves, and that the concerns of persons with disabilities should be included fully in all mainstream national development agendas. At the fifty-eighth session of the Commission a resolution was adopted by member Governments proclaiming the extension of the Decade for a further 10-year period, from 2003 to 2012.
