A polemic against the playing of "miraclis," the Tretise is frequently linked to the Wycliffite or Lollard movements of the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. In an essay on the text's dialect, Paul A. Johnston, Jr. definitively identifies the Tretise as the work of two authors who lived in adjacent counties in the Midlands.
