We are very fortunate that Liszt counted the distinguished trombonist Eduard Grosse amongst his friends. The friendship resulted in three works for trombone and organ, the most important of which is also scored for trombone and piano: this 'Cantico di San Francesco' is a comprehensive reworking of an original religious vocal piece of a quite unusual blend of charm and ebullience, and it is a mystery why it has languished so long unpublished. It is a splendid addition to the very scant Romantic trombone repertoire.
