The editor identifies the compiler of the Codex as Udalrich, who was Domkustos (overseer) at the Cathedral of Bamberg in the first half of the 12th century. The letters Udalrich collected date back as far as the Carolingian era and include letters written by various rulers and popes of the 9th, 10th and 11th centuries
