Description
Reconstructing the creative process of one of the most eminent German artists of the 20th century, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, this book collects his Munich pictures, numerous on-loan paintings, infrared photographs, and original photos of his studio and sketchbooks. For the first time, works hidden on the verso of paintings are shown as well. The catalog provides new insights into the development process of important Kirchner paintings, such as Circus, Dancing School, and Self-Portrait as a Sick Man, and shows the intensity with which the artist tried to come to grips with color theory and luminance. This book renders accessible, in an immediate way, his quest for new approaches to color, which led to a revolution of painterly expression at the beginning of 20th century.
