吾輩はヴァルモンである。パリ警察ではひとかたならぬ働きをしたが、ロンドンから来た長身の私立探偵（敢えて名を伏す）も絡んだ一件の責めを負わされ、あっさり馘首。ふむ、陽春白雪の曲に和する者少なしとはよく言ったものだ。余生は悠々自適と洒落てもよかったが、事件のほうで吾輩を放してはくれぬ。従って、霧の都でも依頼人の要望に応える日々。本書でその一端を明かそう。
