Military hospitals shaped the war experience of millions of German soldiers during the First World War. In the home hospital the wounded and sick met military doctors, nurses and civilian helpers, inspectors, prisoners of war and onlookers. Alina Enzensberger tracks down the hospitals on the home front as transitional areas between the military and civilian spheres. Using a wide range of sources, she reconstructs the everyday life and experience of patients, military medical disciplinary and propaganda strategies as well as debates about war neuroses, invalidity and the commitment of the civilian population.
