Description
What would happen if a city's police force went out on strike? An answer to this question has been provided by history: on Tuesday, September 9th 1919, most of the Boston police force deserted their posts, and for the next two days more than 700,000 Bostonians were prey to mob rule. Women were raped on street corners, stores were looted, and pedestrians were beaten and robbed while crowds not only looked on but cheered. It took the strong hand of the state's then little known governor, Calvin Coolidge, to quell the riots, and he became a national hero virtually overnight.
