The book charts the development of the regional theatres in America and how they have replaced Broadway, as the starting point for most new work in the theatre. As well as being a history of the growth of regional theatres across America, it also offers insights into what the future may bring for regional companies and their strategies for the next millenium. It includes interviews with leading artistic directors, and information on development of new plays and how funding sources operate. It also shows audience development strategies from different companies and addresses issues for specific theatres which are relevant to all theatre companies.
