Description
A detailed look at everything above the deck on a sailboat. A complete discussion of spar construction is followed by chapters on standing and running rigging, with a detailed look at their components, including terminal fittings for both wire and rod rigging, turnbuckles, chainplates, tangs, and backstay adjusters. The author gives a comparison of halyards; a look at winches, cleats, blocks, and levers; and most helpful section on deck layout. He also explains sail trim and basic aerodynamics, and how to set up and tune a rig to optimize rake, shroud tension, lateral bend, mast flexing, and stay tension. The final chapter looks at improvements, modifications, and offshore rigs.
