Nelson considers the ways ordinary Okinawans, haunted by memories of the past, have struggled to live with the unbearable legacies of war, Japanese nationalism, and American imperialism. Through the lens of his own US Marine training and ethnographic research completed over twenty-five years in the region, Nelson asks about sacrifice and residual trauma from events intended to preserve the imperial institution and Japanese state.
