It argues that the capacity to imagine a shared sense of urban identity and community--one that would integrate the specificities of place and occupation and status of birth into a normative sense of shared values--was built on the circulation of woodblock-printed texts. The identity is that of the \"townsman\" or \"urban commoner\" (chōnin), roughly comparable to a pre-industrial bourgeoisie. Where previous studies have taken the townsman as a stable position within a static social hierarchy, The Textual Townsman begins from the premise that early modern identity was not as stable as it might seem: especially in the hybrid spaces of the city, boundaries were dynamic, porous, and open to discursive contestation.
