Summary: "The Werden A glossary has been appreciated since it was noticed in the 1890s as an important unique witness to the early Anglo-Saxon glossary tradition. It has also been a source of much frustration because it exists only in a scattered, fragmentary state: two full leaves and one extant cut down, plus a scrap of a fourth, the two full leaves having been destroyed in World War II and mostly witnessed by a demonstrably inaccurate modern published transcription of an early ninth-century copy. Such is what remains of Werden A out of probably twenty-two leaves as it originally stood in the manuscript. The present edition attempts to bring some clarity to the situation by describing precisely the codicological realities of the remaining text, by identifying the sources of each item as far as possible and its connections to other glossaries and texts, and by sorting out the ancient errors from the modern and presenting as plain and correct an edition of the recoverable portions of the text as possible"
