多環芳香族炭化水素(PAHs)は有機物の燃焼や石油漏洩事故によって環境中へ放出され、水圏に蓄積する。PAHsが海域に流出した際、どのような光化学反応が起きうるのかを研究した。太陽光や紫外線照射の結果から、海水に含まれている塩化物イオンや臭化物イオンによって光反応性の高い一部のPAHsは、より強い毒性が疑われるハロゲン化誘導体へ変化することが明らかになった。
