This volume describes the contribution made by science parks and innovation centres to the promotion of innovation, local business development and job creation. The basic economic and social problems such parks can help to solve are described. An overview is given of experience lessons learned from science parks in the USA, the Far East, and Europe. Overall policy questions are tackled, i.e. science parks and innovation centres as instruments of regional policy; organization and management; finance for operation and creation of new enterprises; and the contribution of universities and research establishments. Attention is then focused on practical experience. Case studies describe the regional impact of science parks and innovation centres, as well as the development of young technology-based firms. Also discussed is the selection of entrepreneurs, training programmes and advisory services, and how to solve the marketing problems of technology-based enterprises.
