This expert guide to obtaining, handling, and interpreting lung biopsy specimens methodically covers both neoplastic and nonneoplastic lesions. Initial chapters review state-of-the-art biopsy procedures for lesions involving bronchi as well as lesions located in the periphery of the lung. Systematically described and demonstrated are transbronchial scraping or brushing, transbronchial needle aspiration, percutaneous needle biopsy, mediastinoscopy, and open lung biopsy. The histology, cytology, grading, and staging of a variety of specific lesions are then clearly delineated in both text and illustrations. The lung pathology reviewed includes primary and metastatic tumours; infections; drug reactions; acute and chronic infiltrative lung disease; diffuse pulmonary haemorrhage; collagen vascular disease; granulomatosis; bronchiolitis induced by environmental irritants; and conditions seen in immunocompromised hosts.
