内容説明
Sir Joseph Banks (1743-1820) was one of the 18th-century's great promoters of science, a central figure in the British scientific establishment, and one of the longest-serving Presidents of the Royal Society. This five-volume work is a catalogue of Banks's own library which he maintained in his house in the then fashionable Soho Square. During his years as President of the Royal Society (1778-1820) the library was frequented by the learned society of the 18th century; gentlemen with a letter of introduction were welcomed. For today's scholar this bibliography of natural history is a comprehensive guide to scientific literature from the 16th through to the 18th century and a companion work to Louis Agassiz's "Bibliographia Zoologiae et Geologiae" (Thoemmes Press, April 2001). Compiled by Jonas Dryander, Banks's Swedish assistant, the catalogue lists key works in zoology, botany and mineralogy, as well as general works in natural history. Each volume contains a subject index and volume five has a supplement and author index to the volumes. The work covers over 28,000 titles.
