Abstract

Flights of outdoor steps are one of the most potent and positive elements that contribute to pedestrian space. Their dynamic figures, with their functions, attract designers. In an attempt to typify the various pedestrian spaces including steps, the authors hypothetically created a diagram model with both horizontal and vertical axes indicating each of the 3 levels of degrees of human behavior and inherent space characteristics. To see if the 9 types are verifiable, we applied our model to a variety of spaces with steps in Asia from various files of our earlier surveys. This paper shows 9 typical but different cases of places in Asia with steps which could properly be fixed to the above mentioned 9 types and explains their characteristics. We can show that our diagram model is usable. Our future task is to continue to prove the validity of the diagram.
