<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>Effects of Al2O3 codoping on spectroscopic properties such as upconversion fluorescence and electron spin resonance (ESR) were investigated in GeO2 based gels containing Er3+. Clustering of Er3+ ions in the gel was briefly discussed.</jats:p>
