Abstract

A survey involving 267 inpatients was conducted to examine their impressions of uniforms (upper uniforms with nine different designs and white pants) worn by nurses working in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. Plain- and flower-patterned uniform samples in white, and bright colors (blue, red-purple and red) were prepared, with the following three types of neck design: V-neck, crew neck, and shirt collar. (1)More than 80% of the inpatients had “significantly favorable or favorable” impressions of all nine samples. (2)A factor analysis was conducted, and the following four factors were extracted: “kindness/ healing effects”, “a sense of responsibility”, “aggressiveness”, and “activity”. The most favored sample received high factor scores for “kindness/ healing effects” and “responsibility”. (3)The “kindness/ healing effects” scores of flower-patterned samples were higher than those of plain-patterned ones. The “kindness/ healing effects” scores of large flower-patterned samples were higher than those of small flower-patterned ones. (4)The “responsibility” score of white plain-patterned sample was the highest, and that of large flower-patterned sample in cool color was the second highest. Although the “responsibility” scores of collared samples were high, their “activity” scores were low.
