Abstract

This study was performed to create guidelines for management of insufficient fitting of brassieres and pads (prostheses, breast forms) in women after breast cancer surgery. Subjects consisted of 10 women with breast asymmetry after breast cancer surgery (5 after full mastectomy and 5 after breast conserving surgery). Three-dimensional measurement of the breast shape was performed and clothing pressure was measured on 10 points over the healthy side and 10 points over the diseased side wearing either a brassier which the woman felt the most comfortable (sample 1) or a brassier which the woman felt less comfortable but used daily (sample 2). The measurement was performed with and without shape-correcting pads in each subject.
It was considered that the major difference between sample 1 and sample 2 brassieres was unbalance of clothing pressure, especially an excessive pressure on the diseased side. Without pads, the clothing pressure was greater on the healthy side. With pads, however, the morphological unbalance between the healthy side and diseased side was relieved. The overall clothing pressure increased after applying pads and tended to deviate to the diseased side. This tendency was evident especially in the subjects after full mastectomy.
